Accountability For Effective Results
To be effective, accountability is an important element to move anything forward. Whether it’s holding one’s self accountable, or holding others accountable. What I know to be true, is some people need specific deadlines to ensure they will follow-through. If something is needed, oftentimes leaders and others aren’t specific with defining “by when” and that can lead to ineffectiveness and can lead to a lack of accountability.
What do you notice about how you communicate your needs?
When working with clients, we often discuss elements of communication, including setting expectations, practicing active listening, and ensuring what has been communicated has been heard the way it was intended.
How do the above behaviors impact accountability?
- When expectations aren’t clearly communicated, it becomes very challenging to hold others accountable.
- When active listening isn’t the norm, miscommunication can easily occur, leading to a lack of accountability.
- When others have not heard what you intended to say, miscommunication is the result, which can lead to a lack of accountability.
If you’re noticing that you have a hard time holding yourself accountable, what do you imagine would help?
Things you may wish to consider:
- Asking for a deadline
- Find an accountability partner
- Share your goals
- Measure and Celebrate your successes or accomplishments
- Use a time management tool
- What else?
If you notice that you have a hard time holding others accountable, what do you imagine “holds you back”?
I know people who don’t set clear expectations because they “feel badly” or are afraid of being judged.
Consider Mindset: Many people feel they are being too direct holding others accountable. If you can shift your mindset to believing that holding others accountable shows you care about their growth and development, it can make it that much easier.
